Be Extraordinary Receives Noble Cause Award
Arthur J. Gallagher Co. Inc. Honors
Providers of Innovative Technology for Severely Disabled Individuals
FORT SMITH, AR August 22, 2013 – Be Extraordinary is the latest recipient of the Noble Cause Award, an award that honors those who are making a difference in their communities through their service.
Be Extraordinary (Be-X), a non-profit organization, provides people with severe physical disabilities the opportunity to achieve their life goals – whatever is important to them. A goal could be to complete high school, write a book, get a job, email their grandchildren or build a website. Whatever the mission, Be-X puts together a team of experts and the right technology to make it a reality – the only requirement being that participants in the program ‘give forward’ to others in the disability community.
Tom Jakobs, President of InvoTek, a company that creates innovative technology for people with severe disabilities, saw that the devices they built offered hope to people who could not meet their goals without costly assistive technologies. He also saw that the cost of caring for a person with severe disabilities could be so great that families could not afford the technology they needed, as the devices are often not covered by insurance.
In 2010, Jakobs partnered with the Arkansas Spinal Cord Commission to develop a pilot program, Be-X, to help people to reach their goals. The program was highly successful, helping 82% of those served reach their goals. BeX grew out of the program into a charitable organization which currently serves 24 people, mostly in Arkansas.
“Be-X and their noble cause are truly incredible,” shared Philip Merry, Area President of Arthur J. Gallagher Co. “They are helping to unleash so many positive feelings and emotions for so many. The Noble Cause Award selection team is proud and honored to bring Be-X on board so that we can do all that we possibly can to help them “Pay It Forward.”
Many clients are quadriplegics, typically due to high spinal cord injuries or a brainstem stroke or injury. Be-X creates a partnership with these individuals to help them live, grow and give following an incident that instantly changed their physical abilities for life -- but often not the mind. As the old saying goes, a mind is a powerful thing.
Be-X has a life goal as well. The organization is unique in the U.S. – there are no others like it. While Be-X currently benefits those living in Arkansas or neighboring states, Be-X has a goal to help those throughout the U.S.
